About Dr. Annabel Kuhn

Dr. Annabel Kuhn, child and adolescent psychiatrist in Brookline, MA

Dr. Annabel Kuhn is a board-certified psychiatrist who completed medical school at Medical College of Wisconsin, residency at Harvard, and fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital.

Her fellowship centered on children with substantial medical, neurological, and developmental complexity, and that remains the work she finds most meaningful. She provides psychiatric care for children who also have medical conditions, treating the child's mental health while considering the full medical picture and working closely with the clinicians already involved.

She also sees adults, and treats a full range of general psychiatric conditions in children and adolescents. Her practice is in Brookline, near Boston Children's Hospital and the Longwood Medical Area.

Every family begins with a brief phone conversation before scheduling an evaluation.

How Dr. Kuhn Works

Dr. Kuhn is committed to supporting her patients with empathy and understanding. As a medical doctor she can prescribe medication when it is needed or wanted, integrating medication management into therapeutic practice rather than treating them as separate services.

She takes a patient-centered approach, considering the whole person by evaluating current relationships, social factors, and history. By maintaining a limited patient panel, she ensures that every patient receives the time, attention, and responsiveness that this kind of care requires, whether through in-person visits or telehealth.

What Working Together Looks Like

1

A ten-minute phone call

Before scheduling an initial evaluation, Dr. Kuhn speaks with a parent or caregiver by phone for about ten minutes. This gives the family a chance to share what they are looking for, ask questions about her approach, and decide whether she may be a good fit for their child. It also allows her to confirm that her practice is appropriate before the family commits to a full evaluation.

2

The initial evaluation

The initial evaluation takes about two hours and happens in two parts.

Part one: Parents and Caregivers

The first part is with the parents or caregivers, before Dr. Kuhn meets the child. This gives the adults space to share the complete history and to discuss concerns they may not want to raise in front of their child.

Part two: Your Child

The second part is with the child. Dr. Kuhn wants to understand the child as an individual, and she also pays close attention to how the child and parents communicate and relate to one another, because family dynamics are essential to understanding a child's perspective. Before making recommendations, she takes time to see how the family functions, what is already working, and what challenges they face, so that her recommendations are applicable, realistic, relevant, and genuinely useful to that particular family.

3

Ongoing care, as often as needed

Many psychiatrists can only see patients every one to three months. Because Dr. Kuhn maintains a limited patient panel, she has availability to see patients as often as their situation requires, which matters during medication changes and periods of instability.

A Partnership With Parents

Parents know their children better than anyone, so Dr. Kuhn approaches her work with parents as a partnership. They bring the expertise on their child, while she brings the psychiatric expertise.

She wants parents to feel comfortable disagreeing with her, sharing their own ideas, and telling her when a recommendation does not make sense or is not working for their family. That open communication is what allows the plan to be adjusted together and a more effective path to be found.

Working With the Rest of the Team

With medically complex children in particular, the information needed to understand the psychiatric picture is often spread across several people and settings. Depending on the situation, and with your consent, Dr. Kuhn may communicate with any of the following.

Frequently Asked Questions

What ages does Dr. Kuhn treat?

Children, adolescents, and adults. Her particular focus is children who also have medical, neurological, or developmental conditions, but she treats a full range of psychiatric conditions across all three groups.

Does Dr. Kuhn accept insurance?

No. The practice is private pay, which is what makes two-hour evaluations, direct communication with a child's other clinicians, and appointment frequency matched to clinical need possible. Details are on the Payment & Fees page.

Does she provide therapy, or only medication management?

Both. Dr. Kuhn prioritizes her role as a therapist and prescribes medication when it is clinically indicated or wanted, rather than separating the two into different appointments with different clinicians.

Is telehealth available?

Yes, for patients throughout Massachusetts. She also sees patients in person in Brookline and serves the Greater Boston area including Cambridge, Somerville, Newton, and surrounding communities.

How do we get started?

Every family begins with a brief ten-minute phone call with a parent or caregiver before an evaluation is scheduled. Adults seeking care for themselves can contact the practice directly.
